MEL MAGHUYOP BIO:

From Houston to NYC and back to Houston

Born in Chicago, IL and raised in Houston, TX, Mel Sagrado Maghuyop grew up a southern boy with big city dreams. Under the guidance of his parents Angelito Mingoc Maghuyop and Erlinda Sagrado Maghuyop, Mel learned to keep in touch with his Filipino roots of Visayan. Both his parents were highly involved within the Filipino community in Houston, both as singers and leaders, so naturally Mel followed in suit. Mel has worked a number of Filipino religious celebrations, singing as a song leader. He also participated in singing contests (Tawag ng Tanghalan). He joined the Jr. branch of the Filipino social group VISMIN (Visayas-Mindanao) becoming Vice President of VISMIN YOUTH. He even co-produced and performed in an all Filipino cabaret group with his friend Ramon Vinluan, called the Houston Filipino Arts Collective.

Following his heart, Mel decided to pursue performing as a career. Originally starting his musical training by playing the Tuba for 7 years, Mel eventually found singing. The beginning of his vocal journey began as a Cantor at church, where his parents were members. Eventually that singing led to being a song leader at many Filipino functions. This journey then led him to Major in Music and minor in Theater at the University of Houston. There he was taken under the wings of old school Broadway’s Stuart and Anne Ostrow. He has been working professionally as an actor since 1998. He has had the blessing of being able to perform all over North America and most recently in Cambodia. There he had the honor to perform in Where Elephants Weep, Cambodia’s first rock opera. He spent almost 2 months there learning about the people and it’s culture. Ultimately, his proudest accomplishment being a cast member of the musical Miss Saigon in various productions from 2001 -2009. But his big break was Miss Saigon here in Houston for Theater Under Stars (TUTS) back in 2001. And now, almost 9 years later, he is back in Houston to do the show that really kicked off his professional acting career.
